Story[edit]

The Journal of Kalos Hathal 12

Ah the joys of regime change… I make suggestions about the design of her new throne but Lyrissa is unconvinced… The general populace are understandably dubious of recent events and there are the distinctive sounds of a mob being incited… Time to flee I think… Dragio’s method for preventing Wachter’s untimely undeath seems a little messy and unlikely to conceal his ‘unspeakable’ crime… We head back into the house so Aldric can Rob the library… Then we wisely flee…

Dragio follows more casually… He hates to be hurried by anyone… Even a mob intent on lynching him… We head for the church… The priest is initially pleased to see us… Aldric drops a hint about our recent adventure… Meanwhile, Bran joins the guards as they investigate… 5 dead cultists and Lady Wachter’s eviscerated remains… Ooops… Bran heads for the church…

Aldric is reading when Bran arrives… The pie-seller trundles past… Apparently, they trade pies for children with souls… The murder hobos haven’t finished their rampage yet so they pursue… Aldric sends out his owl… The bird guides Una/Leyna and the team to the pie-seller… It turns out that the witch is resistant to magic weapons but silvered iron bars certainly work (Thaar smash works quite well sometimes)… The child is dead (Dragio is a terrible shot) and the witch goes ethereal… Thaar rages at her in fury… Una carries the girl-child back to the church… There are fates worse than death… The cart had the symbol of the Durst house on it, a windmill… I’m guessing we are going to be burning a windmill sometime, with prejudice… The cart trundles off by itself but Dragio attempts to dispense some kinetic justice…

Thaar spots some potty-time style footprints and smashes the invisible witch over the head… Green gas explodes outwards and Dragio & Thaar retreat… Thaar throws a log and it lands in the cart… The cart trundles off… Thaar is livid (there is a tear in her eye for the first time)… When we return, Dragio is thrown out of the church… The priest is furious at Dragio’s brutal indifference… Lyrissa defends Una’s reputation when he threatens to throw everyone else out too… Una agrees to leave and Lyrissa follows like a lost puppy… I rant for a while about Dragio needing to learn basic diplomacy but as usual I’m ignored… It’s not that I care about collateral damage, it’s the weird desire to make enemies out of useful allies that really annoys me…

We drown our sorrows in the inn (Una, Thaar and Lyrissa)… Dragio comes in and gets food and drink… He sensibly decides to stay away… The other three bond over their misery… Una prays for the child… Meanwhile, in the church Aldric explains that Dragio was trying to rescue a child that was exchanged for a pie… The priest is horrified… The parents are summoned… They are utterly distraught… Bran plays a dirge… Aldric confronts them… They are sorry and ashamed… The mother admits that one child goes missing each month… The pie-seller arrives on schedule each month… The priest orders them to admit their guilt publicly…

Aldric agrees to seek out the witch so she can be punished… We all rest… By morning, the town is a hive of activity… There are guards all over the place trying to find the murderers of Lady Wachter… Captain Cosmin has taken over… The electors will decide who the next leader is… Wachter’s sons are still missing... Lyrissa can see through Victor’s eyes… Damn… Aldric arrives at the inn suggesting we kill the pastry-seller… Lyrissa hints at the dream she shared with me but doesn’t mention the blonde cultist… The innkeeper outlines the electors…

Body of spider victim in the road… He is carrying a magical embroidered bag… A bag of holding which Bran decides is his property… We head for the windmill… Search and destroy mission… Nike the owl is screeched at by a raven… The windmill is surrounded by forest… The ravens are circling a circle of megaliths… The four ancient stones are covered by carvings of ancient cities – each depicting one of the four seasons… A raven pecks at the autumn stone… Greenfinger finds some teeth… Evidence of desecration… He gets cursed for his troubles (Una is annoyed with him for not waiting until her spell is finished)… The trees start to stir… The windmill starts the turn… We retreat and Lyrissa spots something watching from the windmill… Aldric orders the party to head for the windmill… We hear faint discordant music… The party forms up for the assault… Aldric leads but holds back for the heavies… Damn, the bitch blesses Lyrissa again… She’ll pay for this wretched holiness nonsense one day!

Greenfinger climbs up and spots the witch at the window on the first floor and webs her - somehow we miss this vital piece of information… Thaar charges… She finds the cart… There are bones littering the floor… Thaar goes bezerk and kicks the door off its hinges… We move in and prepare for the worst… Thaar finds an old woman trapped in spider webs… Is it the pie-seller? Thaar assumes that the witch is trapped and heads up another floor… There are two more waiting to ambush anyone who tries to assault their lair… A whole coven of the creatures! Naturally, they lightning bolt her…

We try to gank the restrained hag and get to Thaar… The witch recognises her and they both shout in rage… Thaar gets turned into a toad and is placed in a jar for later… Aldric gets attacked by an old chum of mine – I’ve always liked phantasmal killers… We need to kill these hags before they overwhelm us… Together they are powerful, divided they are much weaker… We need to alpha-strike the one we have or torch this place and flee…
